Nalanda University was the most important and world-renowned center of higher education in ancient India. It is one of the oldest universities in the world. It was founded in the 5th century by Emperor Kumaragupta, the ruler of the Gupta dynasty and adopted the title of Mahendraditya. The university is located near a village in Patna, 88.5 km southeast of present Bihar state and 11.5 km north of Rajgir.
In this Mahayana Buddhism University, Hinayana Buddhism was taught along with other religions and students from many countries used to study. Detailed information about this university is obtained from many epigraphies and travel details of Chinese traveler Hieun Tsang and Etsing who visited India in the seventh century. Chinese traveler Xuanzang was educated here for almost a year.
Let us tell you that this was the first fully residential university in the world and at that time there were about 10,000 students and about 2,000 teachers. To get education in this, students used to come not only from different regions of India but also from Korea, Japan, China, Tibet, Indonesia, Persia and Turkey. How and when Nalanda University collapsed
According to records, Nalanda University was destroyed three times by the invaders, but was rebuilt only twice.
The first destruction was caused by Hyun under Mihirkul during the reign of Skandagupta (455–467 AD). But Skandagupta’s successors had the library repaired and improved with a larger building.

How and when Nalanda University collapsed

The first destruction was caused by Hyun under Mihirkul during the reign of Skandagupta (455–467 AD). But Skandagupta’s successors had the library repaired and improved with a larger building.
The second destruction was done by Gowdas in the early 7th century. This time, the university was repaired by the Buddhist king Harshavardhana (606–648 AD).
The third and most devastating attack was in 1193 by the Ottoman commander Ikhtiaruddin Muhammad bin Bakhtiar Khilji and his army that destroyed the ancient Nalanda University. It is believed that Buddhism, emerging as a major religion in India, suffered a setback for hundreds of years due to the burning of religious texts and since then it has not fully emerged from these events.

At that time Bakhtiyar Khilji had captured some areas ruled by Buddhists in North India and once he became quite ill. He got enough treatment from his princes but he could not recover and reached a moribund condition. Then someone advised him to show him the treatment of Acharya Rahul Sribhadra, head of Ayurveda department of Nalanda University and get him treated. But Khilji was not ready for this. He had more faith in his princes. He was not ready to believe that Indian physicians have more knowledge than his or her masters or may be more capable.
But to save his life, he had to call Acharya Rahul Sribhadra, head of Ayurveda department of Nalanda University. Then Bakhtiar Khilji put a strange condition in front of Vaidyaraj and where I will not eat any kind of medicine given by him. They fix it without medication. After thinking of this, Vaidya Raj accepted his condition and after a few days, he came to Khilji with a Quran and said that the page number of this Quran .. Read it from this to this time will be fine.
Bakhtiar Khilji read the Quran according to Vaidyaraj and it was cured. It is said that Rahul Shribhadra had applied a medicine paste on some pages of the Quran, he read those pages with spit and kept on recovering. Khilji was troubled by the fact that an Indian scholar and teacher had more knowledge than his princes. Then he decided to destroy the roots of knowledge, Buddhism and Ayurveda from the country. As a result, Khilji set fire to the great library of Nalanda and burned around 9 million manuscripts.
It is said that Nalanda University had so many books that it kept burning for three months. After this, on the orders of Khilji, thousands of religious scholars and monks of Nalanda were also killed by Turkish invaders.

Tabaqat-e-Nasiri is a book composed by the Persian historian ‘Minhajuddin Siraj’. In this, information about the conquest of Muhammad Ghori and the early history of the Turkish Sultanate was found till about 1260 AD. Minhaj had dedicated this work to Nasiruddin Mahmud, the ruler of the Ghulam dynasty. At that time, Minhaj was the main qazi of Delhi. In this book, ‘Minhajuddin Siraj’ has also told about Nalanda University that Khilji and his Turkish army burnt thousands of monks and scholars because he did not want Buddhism to expand. He wanted to spread the religion of Islam. He set fire to Nalanda’s library, burned all the manuscripts and kept the fire burning for several months.

– The word Nalanda is derived from three Sanskrit words ‘na + alam + da’. It means ‘no restriction on the gift of knowledge’.
– Nearly 9 million manuscripts and thousands of books were kept in Nalanda’s library.
Nalanda University is considered the second oldest university, after Taxila. Do you know that it existed for 800 years.
– History of Nalanda University was discovered by Hieun Tsang and Etsing of China. Both of them came to India in the 7th century. He also called it the largest university in the world.
– In this university, selection was done on the basis of merit and free education was given. Also, their living and food were also completely free.

– In this university, not only India but students from other countries like Korea, Japan, China, Tibet, Indonesia, Iran, Greece, Mongolia etc. used to study.

Nalanda University Library was 9 floors and had three parts: Ratnaranjak, Ratnoddhi and Ratnasagar. Do you know that it also had a library named ‘Dharma Echo’.
Many other scholars had studied in this university like Hashvardhan, Dharmapala, Vasubandhu, Dharmakirti, Aryveda, Nagarjuna etc.
Literature, astrology, psychology, law, astronomy, science, warfare, history, mathematics, architect, linguistics, economic, medicine etc. were taught here at that time.
– The most important thing of this university was that any decision was taken with the consent of everyone, that is, the students along with the teachers also gave their cows. That is, there was a democratic system here.
– The remains of Nalanda University have been found in 1.5 lakh sq ft. It is believed that it is only 10% of this university.
That is, it would not be wrong to say that Nalanda University is the second oldest university in the world which was destroyed by Ikhtiaruddin Muhammad bin Bakhtiar Khilji.
